If I insert a JavaScript or iframe reference to an Amazon.com book into the text of my article, when I click Save, the Amazon code is deleted. How can I get the article to save with the code?

The stripping of code is performed by the TinyMCE editor. If you are the Administrator of the site, you can go to the Plugin Manager, select the Editor - TinyMCE 2.0 plugin, and turn off the Code Cleanup option. However, this is not recommended because it opens the Joomla system up to potential hackers.

If you set the User Editor setting on your user account to Editor - No Editor, you can edit the HTML text directly and insert the code you need. Even better, you could setup a new Administrator account called something like textadmin and set the Editor - No Editor option on that account. On those occasions when you need to add special code, simply log out of the Joomla system and log back in using the text administrator account. When your edits are complete, change back to your standard account.

therealfredo @black_bile They use joomla. When I used it it had the text editor with 2 options plain text & html, so you don't really need to know html.
